Coffeeland Author Warns Coffee Could Spark New Backlash Over Prices

Although the new U.S. coffee tariff nightmare has since come to an end, Coffeeland author and historian Augustine Sedgewick last week wrote a must-read piece in the Globe and Mail (one visit before paywall) titled “On Shaky Grounds: Free trade and capitalism helped make coffee an American staple. Trump’s tariffs could change everything.” Drawing on lessons from the Boston Tea Party, Sedgewick warns that sustained price shocks in coffee could have a lasting political effect.

World Coffee Research Adds Robusta, Ghana and Vietnam to Innovea Network

Nonprofit World Coffee Research has expanded its Innovea Global Coffee Breeding Network to include robusta alongside arabica. Ghana and Vietnam have joined as two of five countries now participating in the robusta program. Altogether, the 11 Innovea countries account for roughly 40% of global coffee production, aiming to speed the development of climate-resilient varieties.

The Barista League Announces New Competition Concept for 2026

The Barista League is overhauling its competition format for 2026, building scoring around three pillars: product, concept and service. Six events are scheduled between March 28 and Nov. 13, 2026, in Prague, Mexico City, Tokyo, Atlanta, Johannesburg and Brisbane.

Keurig Launches Keurig Coffee Collective, Its First House-Brand Line

Keurig is entering the premium whole-bean market with the Keurig Coffee Collective, its first branded coffee line. The launch features five blends ranging from light to dark, each developed by an in-house Keurig coffee expert. The coffees are debuting for purchase online, with wider retail distribution planned for early next year.

Godori Brings Multisensory Coffee Installation to ICA San Francisco

San Francisco roastery Godori, formerly known as Sāe Coffee Studio, is hosting a two-day multisensory coffee installation at Elsewhere Market, held at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco, on Dec. 6-7. The pop-up will feature the top lot from the recent Colombia Cup of Excellence competition: a washed anaerobic Gesha from the Finca Costa Rica farm in Nariño.

Swedes’ Coffee Habit Now Has Bigger Amazon Footprint Than Beef

The Amazon Footprint Report 2025, produced by WWF, Chalmers University of Technology and the Stockholm Environment Institute and published around COP30, finds that Swedish coffee consumption has overtaken beef as the country’s largest driver of Amazon deforestation.

BrewBird’s $10K Office Machine Proposes Barista-Quality Coffee

A feature in the San Francisco Standard this week highlighted locally based startup BrewBird, makers of a $10,000 office coffee machine that uses whole beans from reputable roasters and precise extraction to brew single cups at the push of a button. The system is primarily designed for workplaces.

Caffe Vita, Pathfinder Release Zero-Proof Espresso Tonic

Seattle roaster Caffe Vita has partnered with non-alcoholic spirits brand The Pathfinder on The Pathfinder Espresso Tonic, a ready-to-drink coffee cocktail. The zero-proof beverage combines Vita Cold Shot, Caffe Vita’s cold espresso extraction, with The Pathfinder Hemp and Root zero-proof botanical spirit.

Pacific Foods Expands Barista Series with Plant-based Pistachio Milk

Pacific Foods has expanded its Barista Series lineup with a new pistachio variety, a plant-based milk formulated for use in hot and cold coffee drinks. “We’re thrilled to introduce a product that inspires creativity and helps expand menus with beverages that celebrate consumers’ growing love for pistachio,” said Pacific Foods Director of Foodservice Marketing Debra Kaminski.
